Anthony Okello’s exhibition opens at One Off and very topical it will be. This coming week his diptych will come up for auction at Bonhams in London at their annual ‘Africa Now‘ auction. This work from his Masquerade series has also been chosen for the invitation to the event (shown below).
Other works from the same series will feature in this exhibition.
Anthony Okello
Anthony Okello is a graduate of Buru Buru Institute of Fine Art. He went on to make art in earnest when he joined the Kuona Trust at its National Museum site.
In this exhibition, Okello’s explores the human psychology of disguise and the covering of true identity. He says the ‘masks hide the real intention of the wearer’.
For the past five years he has simultaneously been producing works which depict his interpretation of tribal allegory and mythology. Whilst the auction at Bonhams this week will be the most public exposure of Okello’s ‘Masquerade series’ in Britain, two of the works from this other series already exist in the private collections of Robert Devereux and Robert Loder.
Okello has exhibited his work extensively at home as well as in Uganda, France, Holland and India.
