Muziki wa Kenya: Ratai Arati and Enyamumbo Band, Mar 1st 2009 @ Goethe-Institut

Ratai Arati and his band perform a contemporary form of the seldom heard music from Kisii peoples in the West of Kenya. The music is centered around the Obokano, a huge eight stringed lyre with a unique percussive tone. The group’s frontman, Moses Arati calls this music Enyamumbo, music that celebrates the “power of the earth”.

Arati has made innovations to the folk music by creating a new instrument called the Enkano, a modernized version of the Obokano. He sings about contemporary issues using humour and satire to deliver the message as heard in an AIDS awareness song Ajali Kitandani. This will be a fun concert with a unique sound.
