Simultaneous Exhibitions: ‘Africa Re-Imagined: A Six Year Exploration’ by Geoff Weedon & ‘Intimacy of Things’ by Olivia Pendergast, May 28 – Jun. 19 2022 @ One Off Contemporary Gallery
One Off is delighted to present Geoff Weedon’s first solo show in Kenya; ‘Africa Re-Imagined’. Weedon first visited Africa six years ago and the impact of the wildlife and its people is clear because he has painted little else since, returning again and again for inspiration and reference. This show is a reflection of six years playful exploration which has expressed itself in different styles and formed distinct series, two of which are displayed in this exhibition.
Meanwhile, opening simultaneously is ‘Intimacy of things’, an exhibition of oil paintings by one of our most popular artists, Olivia Pendergast. In her latest works, Pendergast places her subjects in their places of work, surrounded by the objects which are of significance in their lives. In each painting, Pendergast uses hands, rather than eyes as her tool of expression, along with her signature re-applied pencil lines. The show marks a shift in direction for the artist which will delight her audience.

Dates: May 11 – June 11, 2022
Venue: Circle Art Gallery, 910 James Gichuru Road – Lavington
About
Circle Art Gallery is pleased to present Fictions, a group exhibition of 11 artists at various stages of their careers, working in painting, drawing, printmaking, and in some cases, combinations of all three.
This grouping of artists/artworks invites the viewer to consider possible relationships between one work and the next and, by extension, between each artist’s practice and the next.
The title of the exhibition Fictions speaks to the connections that can emerge in the distance between artworks; and how that space can offer room for the viewer to begin thinking about thematic connections and overlaps.
Fictions contends that one artwork/artist can expand the viewer’s thinking about another.

Jackie Karuti was the main prize winner of the 2020 Henrike Grohs Art Award. This book is published as part of the award, with support from the Goethe-Institut and Grohs family. Additional support was provided by The African Arts Trust. This book was produced by the Visual Arts Network of South Africa.
The book is led by thoughts around Karuti’s ongoing method of inquiry; How Clouds are Formed which has been a developing body of work assembled in many parts using objects, images, spare parts & movements. The intention was to produce an artist workbook that sends one out into the field to move, question & discover. It is largely an attempt to recognize the work that emerges in the present while navigating various site visits through drawings, text, sculptural forms and moving images.
Text and image contributions by Wanja Kimani, Bojana Cvejić, Jackie Karuti & Roseline Olang’.Additional images by James Muriuki & Densu Moseti
The book is will be available for purchase during the launch for KES 2,500.

About
A series of 5 short films by filmmakers from Morocco, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Kenya put together by Claire Diao, the French-Burkinabé journalist and film critic.
How can Africa project itself into the future? Can it tell its own stories in more experimental, offbeat ways than the humanitarian imagery and/or cinematic images of hardship and suffering?
Rwandan artist Kantarama Gahigiri imagines the return to earth of a cosmonaut who stayed in space for 30 years. With humor, Kenyan Jim Chuchu examines the meteoric rise of a young contemporary artist. Between Juju and science fiction, Nigerian CJ Obasi films the adventures of three witches. So what if the goats die is an essay on knowledge or rather on ignorance by Moroccan, Sophia Alaoui. The film “Zombie” is a journey between hope and dystopia in a hallucinated Kinhsasa by the Congolese/Belgian singer Baloji.2017/2018/2019 | 1h25min
Screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Kenyan filmmaker, Jim Chuchu.
