About
Phiri explores the concept of ‘Freedom’, using an approach that challenges the co-existence of different forms and the fusion of different techniques and materials; a reflection of the realities of life.
The artist challenges the debate around the ‘freedom’ to co-exist with the opposite elements in society and the respect accorded to these elements.

Phiri presents a body of work that may be interpreted in different ways and he welcomes the audience to explore their personal views. The exhibit is his reaction and contribution to a topic that influences many, ‘Freedom’.

Exhibition: Silent Conversation By Longinos Nagila, Nov. 25-28 2014 @ Italian Institute of Culture – Westlands

poster
Opening: November 25, 2014 at 7:00pm
Venue: Italian Institute of Culture, Westlands

ABOUT: SILENT CONVERSATION
My work embodies my interest in socio-economic situations in life, while at the same time trying to provoke thoughts that are driven towards the judgment of these situations. I consider my paintings as a platform for conversation from within an individual or between two or more people. My main subject is human, with a kin interest in their emotions as expressed in their eyes.

My sources of Inspiration are endless. I am deeply interested in children and women as I see them both as vessels and sources of life. I have a keen interest on world religions and arts. I take my time to look and try to understand the different visual languages employed by artists from different parts of the world

SILENT CONVERSATION is a collection of portrait paintings of women trying to create a dialogue between the viewer and the ‘paintings’, the paintings, I consider them thought provoking and commands attention.

Though not quite detailed, the portraits silently holds the attention of the viewer. It is said that eyes are the windows to the soul, the main outstanding feature of the portraits is the eyes, they are dark and looks directly to the eyes of the viewer, this creates an emotional disturbance.

The exhibition interrogates the relationship between the artist, the art and the viewer, between what the society considers as beauty and ugly, sad and happy, stereotypes and judgment.

The exhibition will feature 25 portraits of different sizes all produced in 2014.

Exhibition: Life Experiences by Joseph Cartoon, Until Nov. 30 2014 @ Sushi Soo – Japanese Restaurant

Exhibition by Joseph Cartoon

Dates: Until November 30, 2014
Venue: Sushi Soo – Japanese Restaurant
Location: Opposite Komo Lane, Off Argwings Kodhek Road, Wood Avenue

About
Joseph was born in the Village of Ngecha in 1976, where most Kenyan artists have their roots. However after attaining school age, his parents moved to Lari division in Kiambu where he attended both primary and secondary school. Cartoon started drawing when he was still in primary school, art and crafts being his favourite subject besides history and agriculture. While in primary school, Cartoon studied art and crafts for nearly 6 years, though he never continued with it as a subject in secondary school due to the lack of Art in the syllabus.

After completing his secondary education, he met artist Shine Tani on his way to his uncle’s house and It is through him that Cartoon’s talent in art was revived again. Through his guidance and mentoring he introduced Cartoon to Gallery Watatu in 1994 where the late Ruth Scheffner purchased three of his paintings.

Since then, cartoon has grown as a talented artist and has so far participated in 50 group exhibitions both locally and internationally. He has also had over 8 solo exhibitions in Kenya and overseas. Apart from exhibitions, Cartoon’s work has been featured in local and international magazines and books. In 2001 he won a prestigious art award through ROSL- Overseas League and travelled for a 1 month residency in Scotland and 3 week travelling exhibition in London and Edinburgh. Over 160 paintings have been collected by individual art collectors and companies in the last 10 years of his art career.

Since 1996, Cartoon has participated in Art Action and Expiation in Northern Ireland, which is held yearly to raise funds to cater for schools around the slums in Nairobi. Over 500 children benefit from this project.
The drive behind the passion in Cartoon’s heart is to see Kenyan and African art exhibited worldwide and artists free to express themselves globally.

Charity Event in Aid of Palestinians in Gaza: A Note for a Smile, Nov. 27 2014 @ Lord Erroll – Runda

A note for a SmileA Note for a Smile: Music & Art to raise humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza

The six-week conflict this summer left more than 1,870 dead and thousands injured, homeless, and traumatized. The conflict had a particularly devastating toll on Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable. Many of the affected children have suffered serious injuries that cannot be treated in Gaza due to limited medical capacity caused by the ongoing blockades, and others suffer from severe traumatic disorders. They need our solidarity and support.

A group of us working in various humanitarian and development capacities in Nairobi have decided to organize a charity event to encourage the community to contribute to the work of Palestinian health institutions to restore dignity and hope to the Palestinians in Gaza.

All funds raised during the evening will go towards supporting the activities of Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem, as well as to the Gaza Mental Health Community Center.

During the event we will hold a silent art auction showcasing a number of world-class artists from the contemporary East African art scene, who have kindly contributed their work to raising funds for this cause. The impressive line-up of artists includes Fitsum Behre Woldelibanos, Eltayeb Dawelbait, Michael Soi, Anthony Okello, Paul Onditi, Shabu Mwangi, John Silver, Justus Kyalo, Dennis Muraguri, Yassir Ali Mohammed, Mariantonietta Peru and Kamal Shah.

There will be music throughout the night with live sets from some of the best musicians in Nairobi who have accepted to perform for the cause, including Idd Aziz, Teto, Jahm, Afro Simba and Mutinda.

Designers’ fair (featuring Otenge, Chilly Mango, Madafu Moxie); a raffle with a chance to win exciting prizes; food and drinks (cash-bar), and more surprises await you…

Exhibition: CASUALE e CAUSALE (Casual and causal), Until. Nov. 19 2014 @ Italian Institute of Culture

Mario Prencipe at IIC
Exhibition: CASUALE e CAUSALE (Casual and causal) by Italian artist Mario Prencipe

Dates: Until 19th November 2014
Venue: Italian Institute of Culture
FREE ENTRY

About
The function and the life of an artist must follow a parallel path, observing this principle. Mario Prencipe gives his works an additional meaning of “intentional casualness” in harmony with the almost fortuitous character of demonstrating his choices. The works are carried out in many takes, during which the artist searches the “casual” pictorial effect for a possible “cause” for the articulation and development of the composition.

Mario Prencipe was born in Sesto San Giovanni (Milan) in 1965, where he graduated from Arts High School in 1983. For decades he has led a wandering artist’s lifestyle, during which he has held exhibitions at the institutional level at the National Museum of Nicaragua inManagua, the National Gallery of Costa Rica in San José, at the Miraflores Museum of Art and Archaeology in the City of Guatemala and at the Museum of Fine Arts of Komsomolsk-Na-Amur in Russia.

He is represented by the Shen Chang Gallery in Hang Zhou, China

Map
AA_Invitation_20142

The children will be demonstrating the skills that they have acquired during the Anno’s Africa intensive workshops and the One Fine Day weekly arts clubs.

ANNOS’S AFRICA & ONE FINE DAY
ANNO’S AFRICA, was founded by Bee Gilbert and Andrew Birkin, in memory of their son, Anno, in 2006. The purpose of the UK registered charity is to give children in the poorest slums in Kenya, the chance to discover their as yet unexplored artistic potential and the opportunity to lead imaginative and self-determined lives.

Anno’s Africa, works in partnership with ONE FINE DAY e.V., an NGO founded by Marie Steinmann-Tykwer and Tom Tykwer in Berlin in 2008. These two charities, have combined forces in a programme which offers intensive creative workshops for children and young people living in the Nairobi slums of Kibera and Mathare.

More then 700 participants are free to choose from various arts disciplines, according to their preferences: traditional and contemporary dance, ballet, drama, creative writing/storytelling, music, circus skills, and visual arts. European mentors teach side by side with Kenyan artists and performers, who then continue the lessons in once weekly arts clubs, for the rest of the year.

Continuity is at the heart of the philosophy and commitment from ONE FINE DAY e.V. and ANNO’S AFRICA. With regard to these weekly art clubs, as the firm belief is that young artistic talents should evolve constantly. And these regularly scheduled classes give the children, who live such difficult and challenging lives, an exciting bright spot once a week. Currently 24 such creative weekend clubs are taking place in all disciplines through out the year.

The positive results are unequivocal and the children are all making significant progress not only in the arts but in their academic achievements as well. And all of these talented kids are finding not only self-confidence but also great joy in their lives through their new found artistic skills and the development of their imaginations.

Kampala Contemporary Art Festival, Oct. 4-31 2014 @ Kampala Railway Station & 28 Locations Across the City

1_KLA_ART_014_official_poster
KLA ART 014, Kampala Contemporary Art Festival
Theme: “Unmapped” Who are the unheard voices of our cities?

Dates: 4th – 31st October 2014
Venue: Kampala Railway Station & 28 Locations Across the City
For the month of October, thirty artists from Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Congo and Rwanda will unveil
new artworks across Kampala.

The festival will see the reopening of Kampala’s Railway Station to the public for an exhibition that will feature the work of ten artists, showcasing their interpretation of the “Unmapped”.

“The bicycle knife sharpener; the express fashion designer; the mobile nail salon: they fill every corner of the city. ‘Unmapped’ will attempt to artistically showcase how people from every stratum of society adapt creatively to survive” Violet Nantume, Curatorial Committee, KLA ART 014

Five Ugandan curators, working with renowned South African curator Gabi Ngcobo, have selected the artists, who include Helen Nabukenya; a visual artist from Uganda who uses discarded fabric to create vast tapestries depicting the overlooked, the forgotten and the rejected. From Kenya, Dennis Muraguri explores the matatu; presenting it, not only as a transport tool, but also as a space for intriguing gossip and communication.

Reaching out directly to the public, twenty boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) will be turned into artworks, ‘mapping’ Kampala, by forming temporary exhibition spaces in pre–‐‑selected locations across the capital. Ugandan artist Kizito Mbuga will transform a boda boda into a travelling cinema; whilst Ogwang Jimmy John will turn another into an interactive recording studio, which maps the ‘unheard’ musicians of the city. The mobile exhibition will attract new audiences from every corner of Kampala, from the iconic Independence Monument to bustling Ggaba market on the shores of Lake Victoria.

“Building on the success of the festival in 2012, KLA ART 014 offers a platform to showcase new and emerging ideas by contemporary Ugandan artists. KLA ART is a two–‐‑year process of thought, production and experimentation resulting in a unique festival, which directly links artists, artworks and audiences” Rocca Gutteridge, Project Director, KLA ART 014

“Umeme has partnered with KLA ART 014 to celebrate and support art as a driver of community togetherness, self-development and cultural diversity” Core Supporting Partner, Umeme (Energy distribution company, Uganda)

Exhibition/Documentary Film Screening: Crayon Rainbow, Oct. 1 2014 @ Kuona Trust

CRAYON RAINBOWS
You are cordially invited to the launch of the Crayon Rainbows exhibit. Commissioned by Hivos International through their SDI Programme, Crayon Rainbows is a documentary film and art exhibition that traces the growing divide/breakdown between teachers and their vocational devotion to their students in Kenyan public schools as told through the eyes of the children interviewed.

The production team held creative workshops that gave the children a platform to express their feelings about what school means to them. Apart from the interviews, the children partook in drawing, painting, play dough, photography and craft making exercises as well as song and dance. The project sampled 5 schools across Lamu, Samburu, Turkana, Nairobi and Tharaka-Nithi. These art works are what form the exhibit on display.

What the team found was a crayon box worth of dreams and disappointment nestled in a rainbow of hope.
