Exhibition: Then and Now by Clavers Odhiambo, Richard Kuria, Alan Githuka & Wanyu Brush, May 30 – Jun. 17 2019 @ Village Market – Exhibition Hall

Dates: May 30 – June 17, 2019
Venue: Village Market – Exhibition Hall

There was a time the world sort African art for among its other qualities, seemingly unspoilt naivety. Ngecha it could be argued, is the birthplace of contemporary art in the country. Throw a stone in Ngecha, and it will most likely hit an artist! Wanyu Brush is one of the fathers of Ngecha, art wise. This exhibition celebrates him with one of his earliest and notably celebrated and collected protégés, Alan Githuka. Githuka’s crowds of heads, Market scenes and his calming landscape, colourful decongested happy slum-scapes, are a part of any worthy contemporary visual Kenyan art collection.

Mirroring this seasoned maestros are the unhinged young, cool, lit 2 contemporaries; Clavers Odhiambo and Richard Kuria. Through their art, we can note how contemporary art in Kenya has spun, literally on its head, and for the better, no doubt. The young Odhiambo is a master of detail. Kuria is literary unconstrained by medium; using broken and laser cut LP Vinyl records to create masterpieces of juxtaposition. Their subjects are widely multi-faceted. ‘Pop’ cannot fully describe their work.

These two very different schools of thought and creation in the Kenyan art trend, is just a snippet of how the landscape was, is and is continually morphing and forming. Growing.

Experience an icon, Wanyu Brush. Dive into the diverse worlds of Alan Githuka. Enjoy the young.

Then & Now, 2019. By the Little Gallery. At the Village Market. Nairobi.

Where: Village market, Exhibition Hall.
When: May 30th – June 17th, 2019.
Opening: Saturday, June 8th. 2.00-6.00 pm.

Come meet the artists as you taste some good wines with a sommelier.

About
TNR Trust, a registered Trust in Kenya, was established in 2015 following growing concerns over the stray dog and cat population in regards to animal welfare, disease control and population management.

The Trust aims to combine education on rabies and animal welfare with affordable rabies vaccinations and spay/neutering. This will curb the burgeoning dog and cat population and reduce the spread of the fatal disease rabies. This will, in turn, reduce the human mortality rate and improve community health.

Sitawa Namwalie is exploring the many ways of telling stories. She is a poet, playwright and performer. She wrote “Cut off My Tongue” (2008), “Homecoming” (2011), and “Silence is a Woman” (2014) which won Kenya’s Sanaa Theatre Awards Best Spoken Word and Poetry in the same year. Her second play “Room of Lost Names” has been performed to critical and popular acclaim at the Kampala International Theatre Festival and Ubumuntu Arts Festival Kigali.

Aleya Kassam is a Kenyan reader, writer and performer. She has been published in Jalada, Mail and Guardian Africa. She blogs her musings at http://www.chanyado.wordpress.com, which was nominated for Best New Blog at the Blog Awards Kenya 2015.
