The Havoc of Choice: A Book Party! Nov. 7 2020 @ iKigai, Westlands

Date: November 7, 2020
Venue: iKigai, Westlands
Time: 4-9 pm
Tickets: KES 1,500 via Mookh

Join us for the launch of The Havoc of Choice, by Wanjiru Koinange.

The author will be in conversation with Bien-Aime Baraza.

Released in July 2020, The Havoc of Choice is a story about family, politics, and journeying through a fractured country in a delicate time. Long-held captive by her father’s shadow of corruption, Kavata has spent her life suffocated by political machinations. When her husband decides to run in the general election, these shadows threaten to consume her home. Unable to bear this darkness, Kavata plots to escape. As her family falls apart, so too does the country. In the wake of Kenya‘s post-election turmoil, Kavata and her family must find their way back to each other across a landscape of nationwide confusion, desperation and heart-rending loss.

In this title, Koinange explores the long reach and effects of colonisation and corruption within the context of a singular household and the disparate experiences of class and clan they encapsulate.

Wanjiru Koinange is a writer, restorer of libraries and entrepreneur from Nairobi. She was raised on a farm on the outskirts of the city with her four siblings. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Literature from United States International University – Africa, after which she worked as a talent manager for some of East Africa’s most renowned artists and musicians – then as a festival and events manager. She then later pursued a Masters in Creative Writing from University of Cape Town.

During this time she also worked to explore how art may be used as a catalyst for social change. This was channelled through the global non-profit organisation, Africa Centre. While in Cape Town, she also served on the editorial team of Chimurenga.

Her writing has been published in several journals and magazines across the continent including Chimurenga, SlipNet and Commonwealth Writers where she served as a cultural correspondent for East and Southern Africa in 2015. Wanjiru is also the co-founder of The Book Bunk.

Headline act: Nora En Pure

At the core of Indie Dance and Deep House music, Swiss based Nora En Pure is on a quest to fulfil her need to arouse feelings of bliss and inject unconventional and serene sensations to be carried out into the world. The vivid South African, has already proven to be quite productive, what resulted in deep and funky works of audible engineering for the label Enormous Tunes and Tokenish since 2009. Besides her passion for Africa, only music has been able to steal her feelings to that extent leading her to dedicate more and more mind and soul to it. The melodic but mesmerising club music has been fashioning a big and an undoubtedly dedicated fanbase.

Her Remix for Daniel Portman’s KHAWERI in 2010 got huge reactions from all global players, became the preferential mix of the single and launched her career as a producer. In 2011 her track YOU MAKE ME FLOAT hit Top 50 of Beatport charts, made the cut onto legendary Buddha Bar Compilation and got over 500k views on Youtube. In fall 2012 she released AURELIA, which became a requested club hit and made it on various compilations. Her crossover chart hit COME WITH ME first saw lights in February 2013 and made its way up on top of Beatport charts, and remained in Top100 for over 7 months.

2014 has been a great year as well for Nora En Pure, and has seen her touring all over Europe, South America, North America, Africa and Australia. On the production side she has collaborated with the likes of Wretch 32, Aston Shuffle, Adrian Lux and Klingande and her records have made her a Top100 selling artist.

New Year Warm Up Party W/ Gregg Tendwa, Dec. 26 2015 @ Distant Relatives Backpackers Eco lodge – Kilifi

Warm Up Party Gregg
Date: December 26, 2015
Venue: Distant Relatives Backpackers Eco lodge, Kilifi
Entry: Free

Multimedia artist, free thinker, ardent opponent of anything authoritarian, Greg Tendwa’s style is described as mending social reality through music, photography, fashion, food, stories & games.

Gregg Tendwa pioneers a sound called ‘Bengatronics’. “It’s that afro-goodness brewed when benga music meets electronics. It’s some comedy when keeping authentic vibe alive. It’s here. It’s a journey through Afro-pop to Nu-Disco, to saving Benga music. It’s a neutral moment. Without borders yaani bila mipaka in Swahili”.
He is the man behind the WIBO Culture movement – an experimental, self-evolving art initiative that envisions an open and connected global community through culture and the creative arts. In music, Tendwa is a DJ, producer and remixer who brings an Afrolectic aesthetic to his works. His choice of music can be described as full of afrogoodness blended with a layer of percussive sounds from the diversity of African instrumentation. His selection often ranges from Afrohouse to Afrofunk, Afropop, Afrojazz, Afrosoul, and Afrobeat, and whatever other experimental music formats that appeal to his style.

In 2015, his performances have seen him tour Arusha, Jinja, Kampala, Dar Es Salaam and Amsterdam, in addition to headlining the EABL Shekereka Tafrija promotion launch in Nairobi. He has shared stage with German Dj Duo Schlachthofbronx and the Jimmy Hendrix of Kora, Sekou Kouyate from Guinea at Up Life IV. He is the creative director and resident DJ for Afrofusion Tuesdays @ Havana, Santuri Society Sessions @ The Bus and Rooftop Sundowner @ PAWA 254, Nairobi.

Come meet the Legend FOR FREE on Saturday December 26th at Distant Relatives Eco-Lodge & Backpackers.
