Exhibition: Marejeo II ~ Renaissance of a Vision, Oct.1 – Dec. 31 2021 @ the Nairobi Gallery

Dates: Until December 31, 2021

Venue: the Nairobi Gallery

Entry: Museum Rates Apply

About

The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is hosting and curating a series of exhibitions as a precursor to the launch of the National Art Gallery of Kenya (NAGOK). The aim is to provide a platform for dialogue on the need for a NAGOK and a glimpse of what to expect once NAGOK is open to the public: a combination of Kenya’s finest contemporary artists, in addition to historically significant pieces from NMK permanent collection.

The first exhibition in this series, titled ‘Marejeo: Renaissance of a Vision’, ran from 8 July to 8 August. ‘Marejeo’ means the ultimate goal for which something is done, in Kiswahili. The exhibition was part of a project funded by the government through the Department of Culture to celebrate the International year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development. It included an artists residency that brought 40 emerging young artists from 26 counties in Kenya. The young artists were mentored by pioneer Kenyan contemporary artists who led the most significant campaign in Kenya for a NAGOK from 1979 to 1981. The exhibition included artworks from the residency from this residency alongside works by pioneer artists, and selected works from NMK permanent collection.

Marejeo: Renaissance of a Vision II, showcases pioneer artists Kibacia Gatu, Zarina Patel, Haajambi Kangára, Sukuro Etale and collections in The Nairobi Gallery from artists, Annabelle Reeno, Elkana Ongesa among others.

Exhibition: Disobedient Devices by Greenman Muleh Mbillo, Joan Otieno & Dani Ploeger, Until Aug. 31 2021 @ National Museum of Kenya

Dates: July 21st to 31st August 2021

Venue: National Museum of Kenya

Time: 8.30 am – 5.00 pm, Open daily
Entry: Normal museum rates apply

About

Since 2017, artists Greenman Muleh Mbillo, Joan Otieno and Dani Ploeger have been working together in Nairobi. Their project, Disobedient Devices, imagines a future with technology that draws from local stories, myths and memories, instead of globally standardized digital systems by Big Tech. Through the modification and appropriation of used electric and electronic appliances they envisage a technological culture that connects to people’s lifeworlds and that goes beyond nihilistic and unsustainable ideologies of endless growth and ‘progress.’

This exhibition shows eight devices created by artists, fundis and academics who participated in workshops organized in 2019-20, as well as three short science-fiction films by Mbillo, Otieno and Ploeger in which these objects are put to work.

Disobedient Devices is organized by Warembo Wasanii Art Studio in Nairobi and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. It is supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund.

Moving in Nairobi: Stories of Urban Mobility, Until Jul. 31 2021 @ Alliance Française Nairobi

Jiji Ni Ya Who? | Image via Alliance Française Nairobi

Dates: Until July 31, 2021

Venue: Alliance Française Nairobi

About

Explore Nairobi through he eyes of four commuters as they walk, bicycle, ride boda bodas, take matatus, and hire Ubers around Nairobi. Will we ever see the end of the Nairobi traffic gridlock?  Did you know that peak-hour commuters in Nairobi spend an average of 320 hours a year in traffic?  The equivalent of more than 13 days.

The exhibition has been produced by the Civic Data Design Lab (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) which works with data to understand it for public good. The Lab seeks to develop alternative practices which can make the work they do with data and images richer, smarter, more relevant, and more responsive to the needs and interests of citizens traditionally on the margins of policy development.
