Space of Soil by Prof. Kim Sung-Ji

Dates: June 6 – 13, 2017
Venue: Alliance Française

About
Professor Kim, Sung-Jin is a master ceramist from South Korea. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Kenyatta University’s Department of Art and Design for a year.

In this his farewell exhibition in Nairobi, Professor Kim will be showing his wheel-thrown open-work (tou gak) pottery inspired from traditional Korean pottery culture and African art, in a symbolic gesture of friendship between Kenyans and South Koreans.

The open-work technique produces intricate patterns of holes and is a prominent decorative skill in the aesthetics of Korean ceramic art.

This age-old technique carries infinite potential for modern design.

The title of the exhibition ‘Space of Soil’ refers to the porous nature of soil that breathes life into the molded shape giving ceramists the surface space to express their craftsmanship and create their work of art.
