Jumpstart Thursday, Jun. 12 2014 @ Shalom House, Ngong Road

JT June2014

The copying of designs in the craft and design sector is nothing new. In fact, the habit has become so deeply entrenched that many designers have resigned themselves to this fate- sooner rather than later.

Internationally, we witnessed the kiondo and kikoy being ‘stolen’. What could we have done differently? What CAN we do differently to protect our cultural heritage, our designs, our intellectual property?

One of the most powerful yet least understood option is copyright.

The Kenya Copyright Board [KECOBO] is the government body charged with ensuring that the rightful owner of a design enjoys the accruing benefits.

This June 12, 2-5pm, Craft Afrika and KECOBO team up to bring you an insightful discussion on copyright – what it means, what it applies to, how much it costs, other people’s copyright and how to manage it.

It will be an eye-opening, empowering discussion. You want to be there.

Entrance is free, though registration is a requirement.

Craft Afrika: last Jumpstart Thursday of 2012, Nov. 1 2012 @ Growth Hub – Kilimani

Craft Afrika invites you to the last Jumpstart Thursday of 2012,

Date: November 1, 2012
Venue: Growth Hub, Kilimani
Time: 9 am-noon

There is a deeply entrenched notion that as a craft maker, you cannot make a decent living (remember the notorious question- is this all you do for a living?). And yet it isn’t necessarily true and we will prove it to you.

Join us for our 4th Jumpstart Thursday as we bust the myth of the “starving artist”. We will be talking about how to “Make Good Money from Your Craft”. Our Guest speaker, Zohra Baraka has been in the handicrafts business for over 20 years, has a turnover of over USD150, 000 PA (and that’s when sales are very low), is constantly showcasing at international trade shows and has developed a product that can only be described as A1.

She will be joined by Joan Karanja, former founding member of The Cooperation of Fair trade In Africa (COFTA) and Jacinta Kioko-Mwaura of Niro Collection.

AND the best part is, to allow as many of you to attend this business changing event, we are offering you an early Christmas Offer- buy 2 tickets for the price of one (1000Kshs).

Forum: JumpStart Thursday, Jul. 26 2012 @ Growth Africa

Craft Afrika invites you to JumpStart Thursday- a monthly brainstorm and networking session for craftpreneurs.

Every month on a chosen Thursday, crafters come together to share ideas and information around a topic related to running a craft enterprise.

The topic of discussion this July 26th 2012 will be Raising Finance For Your Craft Business. We will delve into issues such as the financing options available to craft enterprises, intellectual property as a revenue stream, the correct reasons for borrowing money and the legal implications of credit.

We want to hear from you so make sure to join the online conversation or better yet, register and become part of a dynamic community of crafters.

Join the online discussion on Twitter (@CraftAfrika using #JumpstartThursday) or Facebook (Craft Afrika) for free and/or register to attend the session for Kshs *1,030 payable via Mpesa, paybill number 111666. Use “JStart” for the account details.
