The award winning film begins in the 1920′s where Giuseppe “Peppino” Torrenuova lives with his brother Nino and his parents in a hovel. Peppino becomes a shepherd in order to help support the family and struggles through school, progresses to young adulthood and falls in love with Mannina. The two elope
Peppino’s idealistic concept is that his future lies in politics and he becomes a Communist, rises in the ranks, eventually even visiting Moscow to meet with Stalin, and returns to Baarìa to help the people in their struggle for land reform and socialism. His dream of being a successful politician is as fragile as it is unattainable.

The director of the film, Giuseppe Tornatore, was born in Baarìa which is Sicilian slang for Bagheria. This is an autobiographic epic of three generations in the Sicilian village where he was born.
