In the snowy winter of 1928, the old hunter Ginzo finally arrives at his village on a horse‐ drawn sleigh. He is returning after a ten‐year prison term. The old man was known as the best dear hunter in the village and was called ‘dead shot Ginzo’ as he could kill bear with only one shot. But he inclined to get violent when he drank, and in a drunken fight ten years ago he had severely injured several people. Consequently he was sent to prison. On his return he learns that his son, a soldier, was killed in action in Siberia seven years ago, and that now he has just his daughter‐in‐law Kimi and his grandson Ippei, whom he must now take care of. Although Kimi opposes it because she knows hunting is no longer viable and she wishes Ippei to attend middle school, Ginzo begins to teach Ippei how to hunt.
