Cut Off My Tongue explores the truths that shape us as Kenyans – our beliefs, the way we behave and why. It is no ordinary reading of poetry, but a spirited invocation to Africans to colonise and mould their own history. It is a show about land, about tribe, about personal discovery, about identity and relationships. The show makes you think and laugh at the same time. It rants, sweats, breaks into song and dance! Cut Off My Tongue is so amazing that when it was first performed last year, two visiting directors of The Hay Festival, UK, invited the cast to take it on tour to the UK 21st – 31st, May, 2009.

“Cut off my Tongue” is based on the poetry of Sitawa Namwalie, and the dance sequences are choreographed by Amimo Olembo. The cast consists of nine performers of whom, two are traditional musicians: Betty Wamalwa Muragori, Muthoni Garland, Alice Karunditu, Ogutu Muraya, Grand Masese , Henry Anyanga, Shan Bartley, Chichi Seii and Amimo Olembo. Although the poetry focuses on Kenya it deals with issues that affect all African countries, and beyond. Our audiences at four past performances have been mixed, including heads of various embassies, and all have been equally thrilled by the show regardless of race, colour, tribe, nationality or creed.
