Art exhibit: Susan Mathenge and Michael Soi, July 8th-31st @ Alliance

July 3, 2008

An exhibition of mixed media artworks by Susan Mathenge and Michael Soi, the latter also presenting a collection of totems

8 – 31 July at Alliance Française ground floor gallery

A lawyer turned artist, Susan’s abstracts and collages are inspired by literature, socio-political and socio-economic issues. Susan either coerces her clippings by the manner of assembly to communicate an intended message, or pieces them together and lets a message reveal itself.

Michael Soi is a multi-media artist, whose work represents an exercise in erasure, obscuring images through deletion and distortion to create a different relationship between the final piece and the viewer. His totems are inspired from the carved grave-posts (Vigango) of the Mjikenda, beautifying these symbols to give them a function as artworks.
